FIP Silver Giulianova: no Frenchwoman in quarters
At the FIP Silver Giulianova, Saturday ended on a bitter note for the French women. After the withdrawal of Léa Godallier and Daiara Valenzuela and the defeats of Louise Bahurel and Juliette Sirgant in the round of 16, one thing is clear: no French player will reach the quarter-finals. For the Tricolore, only anticipation remains for the Bordeaux Premier Padel P2 next week.
The FIP Silver in Giulianova ranks among the important stops on the international women's circuit. In the Abruzzo region on the Italian Adriatic coast, established pairings meet rising talents. In this edition, French withdrawals and contrasting results in the round of 16 shaped the picture of the tournament day.
Godallier and Valenzuela withdraw before playing
The worst news for the French camp came before Léa Godallier and Daiara Valenzuela even stepped onto court. The Franco-Argentine pairing had to forfeit their round-of-16 match against the Italians Deborah Cruciani and Micaela Moroni. The reason was back discomfort for Léa Godallier, which ruled her out of the competition at short notice.
For Godallier, the decision was a logical precaution. Only a few days before the Bordeaux Premier Padel P2, the Frenchwoman did not want to take any risks and preferred to arrive fresh and fully fit for the major home event. Godallier and Valenzuela had recently triumphed at the FIP Silver Narbonne and are regarded as one of the most in-form Franco-Argentine pairings on the circuit.
Their withdrawal opened the way to the quarter-finals for Cruciani and Moroni without a single rally being played. For the French team, it was nevertheless the right call: a short-term appearance in Giulianova would have unnecessarily jeopardised the bigger target in Bordeaux.
Bahurel falls narrowly to the seventh seed
Louise Bahurel, alongside the Spaniard Ivet Val López, delivered one of the strongest performances by the French representatives on Saturday. The pairing faced María Portillo Pérez and Carmen Castillón in the round of 16, who had entered the tournament as the seventh seeds. After a hard-fought three-set match, Bahurel and Val López lost 3-6, 7-6, 3-6.
Bahurel arrives fresh from a prestigious success: she recently won her first FIP title. Against Portillo and Castillón she was under pressure from the start. The first set went to the favoured pairing, but Bahurel and Val López responded confidently and took the second set back in the tie-break.
In the decisive third set, however, Portillo Pérez and Castillón kept the upper hand and secured a place in the quarter-finals. For Bahurel, the defeat was not a step backwards: she had stayed in the fight until the end against an established top pairing and confirmed her form. With a little more luck in the decisive rallies, the Frenchwoman could have made the leap to the next round.
Sirgant and Robinson fall to the fifth seed
Juliette Sirgant competed at the FIP Silver Giulianova alongside Fitia Robinson. For their first match of the tournament, a tough task awaited: Clarissa Margherita Aima and Camila Fassio Goyeneche, seeded fifth, proved clearly superior opponents.
Sirgant and Robinson found no answer from the start to the offence and stability of the favoured pairing. Aima and Fassio Goyeneche dominated the rallies, applied early pressure and offered few chances. At 2-6, 0-6 the match was quickly decided. The Frenchwoman and her partner never really found their footing and lost clearly.
Against such a solid and well-drilled pairing, the difference in playing quality was noticeable. For Sirgant, the tournament in Giulianova therefore ends early. The experience from this match can nevertheless prove valuable when action continues in Bordeaux next week.
Looking ahead to Bordeaux and the next stop
With the elimination of all French women in Giulianova, the focus now shifts to recovery and preparation for the Bordeaux Premier Padel P2. Godallier, Bahurel and Sirgant are expected back on court next week when the major home tournament in France gets underway.
For Godallier and Valenzuela, Giulianova was above all a step on the road to Bordeaux. Bahurel can enter the next week with the confidence of a fresh FIP title. The FIP Silver Giulianova remains a disappointing stop for the French women, but eyes now turn to Bordeaux, where the Tricolore aims for a significantly stronger presence.
