Twelve British wildcards for London Premier Padel P1
Twelve British padel players have been awarded wildcards for the first London Premier Padel P1 in August. The much-anticipated debut of the sport's top tournament tier on British soil takes place at Olympia and marks a significant step for the rising padel scene in Great Britain. The LTA is backing its strongest home talents to showcase British padel on the international stage.
The wildcard allocation covers both main-draw berths and qualification spots. In total, twelve British athletes will be directly involved in the London event – a clear signal that the federation attaches major sporting importance to the home tournament. Premier Padel P1 events rank among the elite of the world calendar and regularly attract the best pairings on the planet.
Women's duo in the main draw
Britain's women's number one and two, Catherine Rose and Aimee Gibson, will compete together in the main draw in London. Both players are central figures in British women's padel and will appear together on a Premier Padel court in their home city for the first time. For Gibson, the wildcard carries special meaning: despite a five-month injury lay-off caused by a severe calf tear, the LTA backed the 34-year-old and nominated her for the main draw.
Gibson told The Padel Paper how much the opportunity means to her. After just over three years in padel, she never imagined receiving a wildcard for a Premier Padel event. She has worked hard and is excited to show her best level. Rose and Gibson also plan to play four consecutive FIP tournaments before the event begins on 4 August to arrive in London in peak form.
Returning to the court after a long break is a special moment for Gibson. Friends and family have already booked their seats, she said. She enjoys playing to a crowd and is looking forward to stepping onto the stadium court for the first time. The wildcard gives them the chance to face the best players in the world – regardless of the draw, the pair can compete without heavy pressure.
Six men's wildcards in the main draw
On the men's side, long-time British number one Christian Medina Murphy receives a first-round main-draw place. He teams up with Spaniard Alberto Garcia Jimenez, with whom he has already enjoyed success on tour. Louie Harris and Alex Loughlan, Britain's numbers two and three, also receive main-draw wildcards. The Welsh pair have built a productive partnership over the past 18 months for Great Britain and on the FIP circuit.
Alfonso Patacho and Chris Salisbury are also represented directly in the main draw. Six British men will therefore start across three doubles pairings in the London Premier Padel P1 main draw – a notable share for a nation still climbing the professional padel ladder. Harris is typically relaxed about his Premier Padel debut. Crowds and the special occasion are not an extra source of stress for him.
You cannot replicate that kind of situation in training, the Welshman said. What matters is arriving in good shape, with rhythm, enjoying the experience and focusing on the padel. Harris called a Premier Padel tournament in Britain a breakthrough moment for the domestic sport. It will show how many fans travel to London and buy tickets – an important test of the sport's popularity on home soil.
Qualification with further British pairings
Beyond the main-draw places, more British players secured wildcards for qualification. Top junior Ben Phillips teams up with Spain-based Jamie Lobo Wordsworth as one of three pairs invited into the qualifying round. Cameron Dollimore and Theo Garton, Britain's numbers four and five, will also fly the Union Flag in the men's qualifiers.
In the women's qualification, British number three Tia Norton partners Belgian Helena Wyckaert. Britain's squad is therefore broadly represented across all tournament phases: from an experienced top duo and established men's pairings to emerging talent and qualification entrants, the wildcard list covers nearly the full spectrum of the national rankings.
London as a new Premier Padel venue
The London Premier Padel P1 at Olympia is the first event of this category on British soil. For players, federation and fans, the August date is a milestone. Harris and Loughlan stressed their gratitude at the chance to compete on this stage against world-class opposition. If they play their best padel, they have a good chance of making life difficult for the favourites.
The wildcard allocation underlines Britain's ambition to be a serious participant at Premier Padel, not just the host. With twelve nominated players, a versatile squad in the main draw and qualification, and Aimee Gibson's return after injury, the sport moves to the centre of the British padel scene in August. The start on 4 August at Olympia will show how far domestic padel has already come on the world stage.
